This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the good fortune of not only working with 3 groups of 4th-grade classes, teaching math, science, and technology--but as I also work with 2nd, 3rd and 4th-grade girls in our Girls' Engineering Club (GEC) which meets after-school for 2 hours every week. We have a beautifully diverse population with students from El Salvador, Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Syria and more. Our English Language Learners make up about 85% of our total population.

It is both a constant challenge and incredible honor to work with the variety of skills and challenges within our school.

We are often recovering from devastating budget cuts. We are undersupplied and often understaffed. To visit other schools and step into their high-tech classrooms, beautiful new libraries or stocked supply closets illuminates the injustice and economic happening within American education.

Yet our students are remarkably persistent, motivated and inspiring. They teach me something every year and bring me to tears as the year ends. I am excited about learning more as I become a better teacher and bring outside resources to my 4th graders and GEC so that we can provide for them every opportunity and experience they deserve.

My Project

We have a lot of conversations about closing the achievement gap in inner-city schools. If we are not teaching children technology in early grades (in urban schools), as they do in other districts and in other parts of the world, then we will be widening that achievement gap. I will bring the teaching practices of Finland and Estonia's coding, gaming, and robotics curricula back to my fourth-grade classrooms and my Girls Engineering Club which meets every week after school. I am thrilled about this opportunity for myself and for my students to gain more exposure into the world of technology. Thank you!
