This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted more than twelve years ago to meet the needs of the cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Eight years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.

I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.

More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from kindergarten to grade 12. Twenty-five percent of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language at home. Most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.

My Project

My kindergarteners have been learning in two languages remotely all school year and I will be teaching all of the kindergarteners at my school who will finish the school year the same way. We recently celebrated our 100 days of school and now we have about three months left. I am not a big believer in reward systems, however, remote learning has been challenging for my students and their families from learning new technology, accommodating their schedules, learning a new language to having some family member and even a few of my students sick with COVID.

Rewarding students for their attendance, participation and engagement in our learning applications will be a way to keep kindergarteners excited about learning remotely.

I want to create a monthly calendar for students to self-track of their participation during virtual classes and doing their independent learning at home. All students will be rewarded for different things from effort, attendance, completing work and for actively participating in class. This will look different for each child, but the goal is to keep them all engaged and learning. At the end of the month, we can have families drive by our school parking lot to pick up what they earned for the month. Because everyone will be rewarded, it will make it an inclusive reward system.

I strongly believe that every child deserves to finish our challenging virtual year excited as well as rewarded for doing amazing and unimaginable things already!
