This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from the outskirts of a larger city. We are a community within a city and it makes for a much more close-knit school. Our school is host to mostly rural students with more than 50% as free and reduced-price lunch recipients.

My kindergarten students are unpredictable and keep me on my toes and that is what gets me up and in my classroom every morning.

Kindergarten is fun because as a teacher I see all the personalities come from home and get a good sense of what the school climate will be in the coming years. Kindergarten is where change happens, minds grow and kids transform into students. I truly love these future leaders and community changers.

My Project

This year has been amazing in our classroom, we have been doing so much learning that we are running out of supplies. We need to refill our center supplies. We have run out of colored pencils and are running low on glue, cardstock paper, and crayons. When sickness hit the classroom we had to throw away some crayons and pencils leaving our stockpile depleted. Now we are in need of more clean materials.

My class this year has faced many challenges that turned out to be the very things that have made this class amazing!

As a General education classroom, it is unusual to start a year with so many special needs. I have had 28 amazing students and more than 1/3 of my class receives extra services. Early in the year, I had the choice to ignore these differences or use them to teach acceptance and embrace our uniqueness. I choose to embrace and wow has this class blossomed. We may go through more consumable resources but the learning and love have made it all worth it!
