This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
When working with my students, I often bring them into a separate occupational therapy room to work on the skills that are more challenging for them. This space is always full of items that are needed to support them but it can appear visually cluttered and busy for these students. Many of my students have difficulty with sensory processing-i.e. how their bodies interpret and react to sensory stimulation around them. A visually busy and cluttered environment sets my students up to be immediately dysregulated from too much stimulation, and not ready to learn.
My goal this year is to provide a calming space that is not over stimulating, to give my students better opportunities to learn.
I am requesting storage carts with drawers to that items can be placed away and out of sight for students. I will teach students where to access these items and they can take them as needed and return them to their place. This will reduce visual clutter in the OT room and allow students to develop a sense of independence.

I would like to give my students beneficial fine motor practice. These materials will help give my young students the foundation needed when they begin writing, drawing and becoming independent learners. The drill kit will boost fine motor skills as they play!
