Fine Arts in 3-D for the Future

My Students

Every day is a new adventure and a new challenge at La Monte Elementary. Our school is a Title I school located in Central Missouri rich in diversity. We have a 40% ELL population and are 73%of our students come from families struggling financially. Despite daily challenges and hardships at home, our students are vibrant and resilient and our teachers are dedicated to making our school and students the best that they can be.

These students deserve positive relationships, a safe learning environment, and experiences that open a world of possibilities for them.

For many of these students school is the one place where they have people they can count on to consistently meet their physical and emotional needs. We strive to give our students opportunities many of their families can't provide to help them become critical thinkers, role models for others, and to give them a broader view of the world so that they can be productive members of our community. At La Monte Elementary we want to build on the relationships we have with the students to set them up for lifelong success in school and beyond.

My Project

As part of a small, rural community our students have little access to the technologies of today that are going to be a way of life tomorrow. The items I selected to add to the Viking Makerspace will afford our students the opportunity to have some hands on experiences with the kinds of technologies that can shape their future career paths.

Our students need a 3-D printer to allow them to be part of designing the fine art of the future.

A 3-D printer in the Makerspace will be used in a collaboration between the Library Media Specialist and the Art teacher to allow students to not just use technology but use it to create. The elements of making and the design process and the character traits that students develop such as perseverance and critical thinking throughout that creative process are key skill sets needed in future career paths. Having a broader view of the world through experiences like these will open the door to projects and career paths our students didn't even know existed.
