My Students
Do you remember being so wrapped up in a book that you didn't want to put it down? Most of my students have never experienced this feeling. They binge-watch a Netflix series, yet they do not realize that books can do the same thing.
My students come to the classroom with a plethora of knowledge ranging from fishing and hunting to mechanics and other hands-on skills.
This ethnically and socioeconomically diverse group of students has a thirst for knowledge that just has to be unlocked.
My Project
My 10th Grade, Honors English students will be examining literature through the lens of culture this year.
"The Poet X," will be an excellent addition to their reading list because of the many different aspects of culture it addresses--from Dominican culture in the US, to teenage culture and spoken word culture.
Furthermore, this poetic novel shows the value of allowing your gifts to blossom.
The unique form of the novel (its written as a series of poems) will expand the students' literary horizons. The author's use of strong metaphors will allow students to examine literary devices and writing, and will also set the groundwork for a creative writing unit.
This novel is an asset to any classroom, touching on topics such as coming of age, developing values counter to the values of your parents, parental expectations, and sibling relationships.
