Finding the Right Book: Building a Classroom Fantasy Library

My Project

In my Computer Science and Engineering classroom, creativity and curiosity are essential—but so is literacy. While I teach my students to build systems and solve problems, I also want to build their imagination, empathy, and love for reading. One of my favorite genres is Young Adult Fantasy, and I believe it’s a powerful way to hook reluctant readers and expand the minds of those who already love to read.

I’ve learned it’s not that students dislike reading—they just haven’t found the genre that speaks to them.

This project will help me build a collection of YA fantasy books that includes series like Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott, Septimus Heap by Angie Sage, and Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. I want students to explore magic, other worlds, and powerful protagonists who help them see their own potential in new ways. This library will be open to all students, especially those still trying to find the stories that spark something in them.
