My Students
My students are incredibly diverse with over 80% of the student body identifying as Native American. 100% of my students are on free and reduced lunch. The are 100 students in the high school.
When I say we're rural I mean it - the closest hospital is 50 miles away and the closest walmart is nearly 100 miles away - we have 6 stop signs and a gas station.
My kids are wonderful, hard working and self sufficient but lack opportunity. That's why I'm here, too educate the mind and teach the heart.
My Project
Kids struggle with reading, that's not news. In my years of teaching I've found that it doesn't matter WHAT they read... as long as they're processing words, vocabulary, grammar, writing skills will develop. The trick is putting books that will engage and inspire in their hands.
Kids need more than basic ELA skills.
They need to be inspired by greatness - they need to see young people like themselves challenged and overcoming challenges and struggling with decisions (and consequences). That is why I want to offer unit novel studies (The Kane Chronicles and Percy Jackson and the Olympians) on young heroes that are flawed but overcome challenges. When students can relate and see themselves in the characters in books, they not only read the story, they engage and ENJOY reading.
