My Students
My students are kind, funny, amazing young people who have the potential to learn and grow up successfully but lack the means necessary. They are hardworking and determined and just want to learn about the world they live in. Most of my students come from a high poverty neighborhood in the projects of NYC and receive free or reduced-price breakfast, lunch, and after school snacks. A lot of my students are English language learners who have moved to NYC from different countries where English is rarely spoken at home.
The children in my class inspire me to not only be a better teacher, but to be a better person every day.
Some of my students come from single parent households, live with many family members in small living conditions or live in a completely different state than their parents with a grandparent/grandparents or an alternative guardian. Overall, my students deal with hardships that no child should have to go through. They cannot afford the everyday materials that they need to be successful.
My Project
This year, my class is full of reluctant readers. These students haven't felt successful in reading in the past, partly because they haven't had the opportunities to read books that interest them. My goal for this year is to fill my classroom library with low level, high interest books for my 4th graders who aren't reading at a 4th grade level, but still want to read 4th grade content. Over half of my students have learning disabilities and are reading significantly below grade level. I need books that will help them fall in love with reading like I have.
Being a reluctant reader can stem from not having access to the right books.
This project will give my students various books options across many genres and levels. No student should feel as if there is nothing to read in a library full of exciting books. No student should feel alone if they can't find anything at their level that interests them. This is why I am determined to acquire high interest, low level books for my struggling readers!
More than half of students from low‑income households
