This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first grade students face challenges in life, but they are always energetic, enthusiastic, and positive about their academic success. Our school faces the same issues as other low socioeconomic areas, but we are a gold mine in that the teaching staff is committed to ensuring our students get their basic needs met in order to focus on their academic and social growth. My students should be able to grow without worry or hunger with the focus on academic success.

My Project

My first grade students are learning about the fundamentals of reading. This includes concept of print, phonemic awareness, fluency, and word recognition. Learning to read is a lot of work! However, I wish for my new readers to love books and not see reading as a chore. In donating to my classroom library, you are helping expose new and wonderful titles to beginning readers and hopefully will help to expose them to the joys of books. Research has proven that strong readers will be more academically successful than peers that struggle to read. Books are the key to loving learning!
