My Students

In our visual arts program, students who have reached the 8th grade and who have taken an art class can elect to take the sculpture class. It is an opportunity for students to put their drawing and design skills to the test and transform ideas proposed in two dimensions into three dimensional builds. Students experience various materials and are challenged to apply STEM concepts such as area and volume as they construct their sculptures.

My students ride an emotional rollercoaster as they work their way through middle school.

As they approach 8th grade, students I observe how much they mature and also still need guidance to continue to grow so they can more readily face high school. It is important to guide them through being more reflective and continue to strengthen their critical thinking skills along the way.

My Project

My students struggle with finding their place in the world. Having strong memories of my own adolescence and working to find my place in the world, I want to share that experience with my students by guiding them through the creation of three dimensional self-portraits. I'm requesting new glue guns, paint brushes, armature wire, and supplemental supplies in order for my students to use while constructing a mirror image of how they see themselves represented in the form of paper mache bust.

In my classroom, we study master artists in order to determine the purpose behind their work and what methods they chose to create it.

For this project, my students will study the self-portraits of artists such as Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, and various others in order to glean ways they too can express who they are in their piece. During the process, students will be mindful of employing their knowledge of time management, states of matter, and engineering as they use the materials to accurately capture the proportions of their own face, head, neck and shoulders prior to adding their choice of color and decoration in order to express who they are.
