This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a large school with 900 students who all qualify to receive free breakfast and lunch. I teach 24 first graders who are English Language Learners. My students come from families with limited resources but a vast desire for their children to succeed. Parents often work two and three jobs to make ends meet. When I talk to them, I see the hope they have for their children to have a better life. Despite the hardships my students face, they come to school eager to learn and with a smile on their faces. My goal as their teacher is to foster a life-long love for learning and encourage them to be risk-takers.
My Project
Many of my students are struggling readers and they're spending their precious reading time looking for the right book. If we had a leveled book cart and book bins where we could easily find books that are at the "right" reading level, we could use our time to get lost in the stories we can read, instead of thumbing through all the ones we can't. This will help them increase their reading time and decrease the frustration of finding a book that's "just-right" for them.
Your donation to my project will help make it easier for my students to find books that are at their reading level.
The book cart and bins will allow my students to go straight to the book bin with their reading level and choose a book. They will no longer be frustrated looking for a book they can independently read.
