Finding New Ways - Ditching the Textbook for Technology

My students are amazing young thinkers and love learning in every subject area.

They are 7 and 8 and absorb everything we do in class like little sponges. They are bright, funny and care deeply about each other, our school, and our environment. Our school is in a suburban area and part of a large school district. We are in a working class area with some parent help. Our problem is that we are stuck in the middle. Not poor enough to get extras from the district; but not rich enough to have the parents fund all that we need. If we could just have some technology in our classroom, just 6 Chromebooks, the world would open up for us and we could keep pace with new ways to make learning happen.

My Project

These 6 Chromebooks will open up the world of technology inside our classroom. The kids will be able to use these Chromebooks in small group work every day, instead of waiting for our computer lab time that we get once a week. We will be able to use Google Classroom every day. We will be able to make presentations and work collaboratively on research every day. We will be able to practice math facts on fun and engaging websites every day. These Chromebooks will make teaching and learning in the 21st century a reality.

There are amazing resources on the Internet to extend and engage students learning.

But with only 30 minutes in the computer lab a week, there's just not enough time for my kids to experience it. 6 Chromebooks to use every day would make the Internet a teaching resource for myself and for the kids. We could bring the world of insects to life; we could make Charlotte's Web an interactive lesson; we could make Native California tribes come to life. My kids will really be ready for the future!
