My students need to stop reading from broken down binders instead of books. Actually having the books makes ALL the difference in the world- some kids have completed their first ever book in my classroom. That is why my students need 16 new copies of "Finding Freedom."

My students deal with a number of issues that stand as obstacles to their learning. They have a wide breadth of learning ability. It is a high need community, we have a special education focus and the kids are dealing with issues of incarceration and a lack of school access.
We have a suffocating lack of resources. We need books. We NEED books. One of my students just named his newborn baby after a character in the first book he ever finished, he read it in my classroom. The kids are engaged and interested in the books I can provide for them to actually hold and read from.
I have had success providing engaging and relatable materials for the kids to access. I have students who have never read a book, let alone read it aloud and with the class. Having the book in their hands kickstarts the esteem and fortitude for the kid to take chances. That willingness has been fodder for me to push them into success reading.
This particular book, "Finding Freedom," has met with a great deal of success in my classroom, it has proven itself with my population and I wish to actually let the students have access to the books themselves.
It has been far too easy for a marginalized and disenfranchised student to come into my classroom for the first time only to see old, scavenged binders full of photocopied pages and think, what the hell, what do I need this for, forget this! Many have gotten too used to a lack of resources for them. It may seem like a small thing, but just having the book to hold in your hand is a big deal for many of my kids. Let alone it being a book they are quite interested in.
