Finding Compassion and Empathy Through Reading

My Project

How can students feel empathy and compassion for others if they don't know about their trials, tribulations and triumphs. We're building a classroom library with the stories of people and places all over the world; people from the past, the present, and maybe the future. I've received donations of over 3500 books in the past few months and need the equipment to label, store and track the books traveling in and out of the library. I am requesting shelving accessories, wall decor, book labels and barcode readers.

As a high school teacher in a low literacy area, our library has multiple purposes; improve reading levels, ignite interest in reading and the people they're reading about, and build compassion and understanding of the people who live throughout the world, especially those who are suffering or have suffered hardship.

Not only will they learn about those people who've gone through hard times, they will learn about those people and groups who have come together to assist the less fortunate. The goal is to get them to ask questions, get curious, get answers, and act to help their neighbor(s) and others in the world.

We'll have reading assignments that end with an essay of what the students can do individually and as a group to help a group in the community and a group of people in another country. The idea is to build up your own community and pay it forward to another.
