Do you know what its like when everything is buzzing around you, you are doing a million things at once, you can't focus or pay attention, you impulisively blurt things out and/or you can't stop tapping, doodling or figiting? This what life can be like for students who have ADHD.
Our population is "at-risk" and 98% of the students quailify for free/reduced breakfast and lunch.
My school is a Title One School that has 377 students ranging from profoundly mentally disabled, educable mentally disabled, and regular education four year old kindergarten through fifth grades.
I work with students daily in classroom guidance lessons, small groups and in individual counseling. Some common topics we work on are self-esteem, social skills, coping skills, drug/alcohol abuse prevention, bully prevention, career awareness and anger management.
There are several students at my school who are diagnosed with ADHD. Students who have ADHD are typically more active than the other students in the classroom. We would like to help these students learn to manage their medical condition and accomidate their needs to the best of our ability.
My Project
Allowing students to use the mini trampoline during a sensory break, would allow him/her to release extra energy, so that when he/she returns to the classroom he/she will more available for listening and learning. The stress ball is a great tool for a student to use in the classroom. It is an effective way to get energy out of ones body without being distruptive to the learning environment. Lastly the Children's music cd has songs which promote physical, social/emotional, and academic health. This would help engage students during sensory breaks, classroom guidance, or small groups.
This project is important because students with ADHD need to learn to cope with their condition at an early age, so that they can be successful in school and moreover in life.
It is highly important for all my students to feel good about themselves and know their great potential. By providing encourgement and strategies I can provide hope for my students.
