Can you find yourself in a book? For my students, it is harder to find books that have characters with a similar background. My fourth graders from a high poverty neighborhood are in need of books that they can identify with.
My students need books that they can relate to, which will hold their interest. Being interested in the books they are exposed to will help them become proficient readers. It is difficult to find books that have characters whose lives reflect those of my students.
One author who writes about my students' life experiences is Nikki Grimes. This award winning author has written many books that deal with the issues and concerns of my students. By reading these books, students will be able to see their life on the pages.
Please help my students find books that will provide them with a rich literary experience. By putting these quality books in the hands of these students, you will be opening the world of possibility to them.
