Can you imagine a school with no art program? Art has been cut from many schools including mine depriving the students help them express their interpretation of the world around them. world outside of their studies.
The district I work for is a public school located in a low economic area.
My students are fourth graders, some of which suffer from learning disabilities and behavior issues. One thing I've always tried doing with my students is arts and crafts. Their faces light up when they see basic things like construction paper, markers, and/or paint because it is their chance to be creative. There aren't many, if any, supplies left for my students to use and my district does not provide supplies for them. I also use that time as an incentive for them to make sure all homework and classwork assignments have been completed. It's a great and positive way to motivate their success.
The supplies I am requesting are basic art tools that will get my students going on the path of a successful arts and crafts program with my class. I know they will be excited when using more than a pencil and paper to express their creativity. I would also use arts and crafts time to integrate with reading and math lessons. I think it will help them to grasp concepts better. As an artist myself, I look forward to teaching them the basic concepts of painting and drawing. There is so much I would like and can do with my class this year if I had your help.
Donations for my project would greatly help my students.
Unless they transferred from other school districts they don't know what it's like to have art at school. They never experienced bringing in an old shirt to be used as a "smock" or mixing colors to create new ones. Being a teacher has to do with more than just teaching reading and math, it's an opportunity to effect a life in a positive way. I'd like them to have art to look forward to at school, since most don't have much at home.
