Students want to get out of the city! Many students and parents think that the science classroom is only about learning how to work in a lab. I want to introduce outdoor challenges as an extension of the science classroom.
Children who never get out of their neighborhood. Students who never get out of the city. These are my students. They don't have the resources to get out into the outdoors. No one to take them, don't know where to go or what to do. These are things that my students tell me.
The majority of my students have never taken a walk in the woods. I want to provide an opportunity for them so that when we are looking at maps, they understand why people use and need maps. An orienteering or a map and compass class provides an excellent opportunity to get the students out of the city, observing nature, practicing reasoning skills and learning important skills.
We are an urban school with economically depressed students. Our students miss out on many opportunities that other schools/children take for granted. Almost 98% of our students receive free lunches. Many students come to school to get meals. Fun activities such as going to the Metro-park with their family to hike on the trails is not going to happen. You can help give these children a fun, learning course that will enrich their lives!
