Financing a Restaurant

My students need plates, napkins, utensils, tablecloths, cooking supplies, a cash register, and some craft supplies to help us open our own restaurant!

My Students

My students are an amazing group of caring, funny, and kind 6-year-olds. They are a diverse group; many students having special needs and most being English Language Learners. They all come from very different home environments. Some of my students are lucky enough to live with their parents and siblings, while others may live with their grandparents or other guardians while their parents are out of state for work. Many of my students tend to lack resources, experience, and exposure from home, so it is important for me to provide them with experiences that are both academic and fun.

My Project

Each year First graders study restaurants; from the workers to the ins and outs of how a restaurant is run. For our final project, we will open and operate our very own restaurant!

This will be one of the most fun experiences my students will ever have in school!

Each student will have a job and will do everything from advertising and being a hostess to cooking the food. Together we will come up with a concept for our restaurant; using poster boards, slick stix, and sharpies create our own advertisements and an awning for our store front - and use an open and closed sign for a little extra restaurant feel. We will then create our own menu and cook the food using our cooking supplies such as baking pans and measuring cups. Once all this is done we will have our restaurant opening. On opening day we will heat/cook the prepped food and serve it to our customers in our restaurant. Table cloths and flowers will dress up the décor and paper goods will be used to serve the food - we will even use plastic containers to make some deliveries and fulfill some take out orders. After dining in our restaurant our customers will visit out cashier using a cash register and pay for their meal.

Together we will work as a team to run a successful restaurant and in the process work on community building and improving our math skills (using a cash register to double check our calculations of course).
