Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When was the last time you heard a 5 year old say, "I can wait until it is on sale" when it comes to shopping? Kindergarteners do not enter school understanding how to compare needs and wants, let alone compare pricing. They live in the now. But that doesn't mean it can't be taught.
I am a kindergarten dual language teacher in a Title 1 school.
Approximately 85% qualify for reduced or free lunch. But that does not keep them from learning. They are an awesome bunch willing to try new things, take risks and problem solve through challenges. They are funny, creative and love to share their triumphs. I want to give them opportunities to become financially literate in an era where saving money seems to be an afterthought. Giving them as many tools as possible to succeed in the real world is my goal. I hope that this project brings me just that much closer.
But before my students can learn about saving and spending, they need to know what needs and wants are and how we obtain those needs and wants.
My Project
The iPad and headsets I am requesting will help my students 1) learn how to count money, specifically coins, 2) learn how to compare money, 3) be able to to research and watch videos on needs and wants, 4) use apps to create projects on demonstrating understanding of needs and wants and 4) play games which specifically target resourceful spending. I plan on having my students use apps like Educreations (which we already use for language arts) to create a recording of their argument for their chosen "need." I will also have them uses apps such as Amazing Coin and Number Pieces which will help them learn to count money and use proper place value as well as Fizzy's Lunch Lab Fresh Pick, a grocery store game, to put their learnings into context.
By donating to this project you will be helping my students access tools which will help them develop a stronger sense of financial literacy.
They will enjoy learning math skills in a new and innovative way. And that is what kindergarten should be all about! Thank you for your consideration of this project.
