Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

After spending a year teaching 5th grade math skills, I often wonder if the students are able to apply their skills towards real-life financial situations. So each June, we spend a couple of weeks learning to be financially responsible. We make a budget, "earn" an income and have expenses.

My 33 5th grade students come from a low income, high crime area of Southern California.

This year, all of my students qualified for the free breakfast and lunch program here at school and many of them speak English as a second language. With so many challenges they bring from their homes, it can often times filter into the classroom. I spend a good part of my teaching keeping in contact with the psychologist, social skills workers, community liaison, parents, attendance liaison, counselor on staff and the school nurse to try and help solve many of the outside issues that are affecting their learning in classroom.

My Project

At the end of each year, I create a financial situation for groups of students in which I teach them what an income is and how to earn one. They then have real-life expenses they need to pay for such as utilities, food and housing. I secretly enjoy hearing the students discuss how "it is too expensive and we can't afford it this month," or when they yell,"How much does that cost?!" The conversations, as they try to gain financial literacy, are fun to listen to because in a few short years, they will be having those conversations for real! By using the game Pay Day, the students will be able to work in groups and use their newly learned budgeting skills to play the game. Each group of students will have an opportunity to display their financial strategies for saving and spending their income. In addition, I would like to have 5 Chromebooks so the student groups can take the pencil and paper budgets they create and learn to make a spreadsheet for their expenses each month.

With the generous help of Credit Report and any other donors, I would like to provide a culminating activity for my students that will put their financial literacy skills to the test.

With so many math skills learned independently throughout the year, I would like to have a culminating group activity that brings all of their skills together. With the help of Chromebooks, magnetic money and Pay Day games we can do this! Thank you Credit Report. Com for considering my project this year.
