My Project
My students decided in the 10th grade to explore careers in the business and finance industries by applying to become members of the Business and Finance Academy. As they matriculated through high school they took one extra business elective each year. As juniors, they applied and interviewed to become credit union Interns. They run the credit union, inside our school, each day from 12-2. Because we have not gained a significant customer base in this location yet, they conduct workshops on college financing, loans, credit, taxes, investing, budgeting, career and salary exploration, etc. Other teachers sign up their classes for workshops and these students go to the classes and conduct them for their peers. In the past, we were even able to conduct financial workshops, for the community, after school hours.
The students learn vital knowledge to help them navigate the financial world in the future and they, in turn, teach their peers and community.
Making this community, city, state and country stronger, hopefully. Our biggest hold up has been portable technology to help us conduct the workshops. Our days of passing out hard-copies are not COVID safe. Because they go to some places that are not compatible with their technology they have run into issues but if they had the LCD they could take the show on the road; to other schools in the district. Leaving high school with a personal finance plan would help enormously and save a lot of time and money in their future.
