This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Young children probably know what money is for: We hand it over and get food or goods back in return. But they don't yet understand that each coin and bill has its value. To help teach the denominations of coins, we need resources that help explain how much each is worth.

I have 21 wonderful students.

11 are boys and 10 are girls. They are very happy to come to school and enjoy books and play time. These little learners are a fantastic group eager to learn. Technology gets them excited and they can sit and learn while on an iPad. They are just starting to understand addition /subtraction and need lots of opportunities to practice financial literacy skills and strategies that will help them be successful.

My Project

Financial literacy is an important subject all young children need exposure to. My little learners need to gain addition practice by counting pennies and the resource book on Minilessons for Early Addition and Subtraction, can help them gain the skills they need to count money. The DVD, will be fun to watch as they learn about making change. Our classroom Rekenrek, will help my students relate to numbers by counting by 5 and tens, and great strategies for addition and subtraction. Thus, counting coins will be easier too! The dot paint will be used to transfer their learning to paper as we practice counting pennies using ten frames. The iPad will support their learning with great apps. The Daily Five, will help us focus on books that can help my students make personal connections. Each student will get a book,"Bunny Money," to bring home and get parents involved.

Having these financial literacy materials and resource books will make a huge difference!

Kindergarten is a crucial year to build the foundation for learning. Books help make personal connections and taking a book home will motivate the children. Addition and subtraction are the basic concepts of financial literacy for these young learners. Your help will bring smiles and great resources that help young minds explore financial literacy.
