My Students
My classroom and teaching style are not what a typical social studies room would be. Everything I do ties back to the skills that I know students will need in order to be successful in college and in the real work world. Students learn by reading, analyzing, and simulating the real world.
My classes fall under the umbrella of a business based academy that is open enrollment and students who take this AP Government course are looking to gain knowledge and experience understanding how the US Government works.
I will help guide them to make connections between the actions of our various levels of government and financial institutions. Understanding this connection can help students to be better prepared and financially savvy for their adult life.
Students in this class come from diverse backgrounds culturally and from varied socioeconomic situations as well. We have 75% of our students receiving free and reduced-price lunch. The school population is 51% Caucasian and 49% minority. My school aims to align with college and local career readiness by simulating the real world within our curriculum.
My Project
I teach high school at a business themed career academy and my students are taking an application based government course. While it is very important for the students to all understand the basic functions of the government, it is even more important that they understand how government decisions impact their individual lives every day.
With the help of these donations, my students will be able learn how government actions impact our daily financial markets.
This stock market simulation will enable student teams to work together and purchase stocks in real time. They will bring together knowledge of current events, government regulations, and financial literacy, in order to make sound economic decisions on their stock portfolios.
