I am so lucky to be one of two teachers for 11 amazing students this year. I teach Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities in a special education school. Our program is new and growing so quickly! We currently serve students grades K-8 and have grown from 5 to 17 students in the past year.
Almost all of my students have been alive less than 12 years and have endured more than most adults I've ever met.
They are bright, triumphant, creative and hilarious. They've experienced trauma and adversity - but they are also beginning to experience support, consistency, success and confidence like they have never felt before.
More than 80% of the students in our program receive free or reduced price lunches. My students spend anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes on the bus to school each day to arrive at our out of district placement. It's my hope that by the time they get to us, our classroom is a safe, cheerful, comforting space for them to learn, grow, love and be loved.
My Project
The end of the year is usually filled with excitement as we pour hours and hours into our capstone projects. Our students learn about their capstone project early in the fall and spend all year acquiring the skills they need to complete it in the spring. Parents and family members take the day off from work and travel, sometimes almost an hour, to come to school that day to see their child present their year-end Expo Project.
Unfortunately, this year, our year end celebration will look a lot different - but I am committed to making sure this project can still come to life!
These materials will allow me to create lessons, host small groups, record video material, and so much more to be able to complete our final unit. It is such an exciting way for our students to use the skills they have learned in math, reading, writing, science and social studies and apply them in a really practical, hands-on way. As a special education teacher, it is important to me that my students learn both academic skills and life skills. Our life skill focus this semester is financial literacy and teaching our students how to create a budget for their "trip" to their chosen U.S. state allows them to practice these important life skills. With the materials I am requesting, I will be able to teach these lessons and students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of financial literacy, academic subject areas and oral presentation skills even when we are out of our classroom.
