Financial Literacy Through Money and Decimals

Help me give my students the visual representations needed to understand fractions, decimals, and money. This will allow them to conceptually understand money to gain financial literacy.

My Students

As a math teacher, I get to work with entire grade levels by co-teaching lessons and working with small groups of students. My students are extremely hard working and come into math with a positive attitude. I have worked to instill a growth mindset in my students. This has helped them be open to learning new content and trying new strategies. Despite any challenges students may be facing, they preserve through and give their absolute best.

My students are a diverse group in who struggle to understand place value and the value of money.

My students are more engaged and demonstrate a stronger understanding of the content when hands-on manipulatives or visuals are used. The students especially enjoy learning through inquiry or games.

My Project

Currently, we have limited funding and manipulatives or activities to assist students in understanding the value of decimals and money. By purchasing manipulatives and games students will be able to conceptually understand the concept of money and decimals. Also, purchasing the materials in vinyl storage packages will allow for easy storage and longevity of the manipulative.

To understand decimals, students only have base 10 blocks right now but the translucent decimal and fraction representations allow students a new visual in order to compare and find equivalent decimals.

Students currently have plastic coins and paper bills to practice money. The money games will provide our students the extra practice they need to understand the value of each bill and coin. This will also allow them to practice different combinations to pay for items and determining change. The allowance game will provide real world practice for students that can connect to their home lives.
