Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an eager, active group of school loving children. They come to school to hang out with their friends and fill their minds with knowledge. They come from low-income families and majority of them qualify for free lunch. My students feed of the energy of each other and rely on each other to build their confidence.
Being in a special education program they know the importance of empathy and teamwork.
They always root each other on and support each other.
My Project
I currently have a token economy in my classroom. The students can earn tickets for a job well done, helping friends, being punctual and initiating work independently. They love this and the system has been working for years. They learn how to count their tickets one by one, by twos and in groups of tens. This year I want to bring two goals together; behavior and money.
I could use actual money to help them identify dollars and coin denominations, as well as get excited to earn and count the money!!
Lots of my students have no idea of a penny is or how to count change or dollars. But bringing money into my classwork will help to reinforce the lessons on money that we are doing. They get excited to pick from the treasure chest and store, so this will keep them excited to count their money. We also need more items for our treasure chest and store so that we don't run out! These small items give the students lots of motivation to work hard, be a team play and be leaders!
