Financial Literacy Through Art

My Students

My classroom thrives because of our diverse student population. Inside the art room we are able to use art as a platform to explore different cultures and narratives. Students learn to analyze and respectfully critique one another’s work as a way to learn about one another and question their own preconceived ideas.

I am most excited when I see my students making connections between art and life, or when they discover the relationship between art and history, math, literature and the sciences.

My Project

I would like to offer my students the opportunity to open a mock art gallery as a way to learn financial literacy. Students will be given starter money that they can use to buy felt and other materials to create ornaments and small stuffed figures for inventory. They will have to decide on a gallery name and branding. They will learn to keep financial records and use them to determine the price items must be sold at to gain a profit while paying fair wages to employees and themselves. They will have to determine how many hours they must work to pay their own bills and be financially independent.

This project provides an opportunity for students to use their art as a vehicle to understand the importance of being financially literate.
