Financial Literacy: The Math and the Money

My students need a powerful desktop computer, with a LED monitor, to replace our aging machine so that we can develop financial literacy projects.

My Students

Watching students wait for a computer to load with the valuable information they need is frustrating, and just think of the instructional time wasted. How can we pursue our Stock Market Game investigations with a machine that is too old to load the latest applications?

We are a fifth grade public school class located in New York City.

We live in the borough of Queens, which is one of the most diverse areas of the nation. The many cultures represented by our school community enrich us all and the many languages and customs give us a better understanding of the international landscape. Our parents look to us to provide the best education possible using 21st century technology so that their children can be competitive and aspire to attend the best magnet schools in our great city. Financial literacy is essential in today's world and the drama is in the economy in everyday current events. It has become an imperative to start early with financial literacy and so we play the virtual Stock Market Game and work with InvestWrite, a financial literacy and writing competition. To compete successfully we need to research our virtual investments and a powerful computer would go far to help us achieve our goal.

My Project

We are requesting a desktop instead of a laptop because we can obtain for a modest price a more powerful computer that can do so much more. The desktop we have is beyond any potential to upgrade and so we hope a new desktop with far more memory can help us with our research, financial video playback, and more. We have intentionally chosen a modest display that would work well with our desktop. A workhorse computer and monitor are what we need without frills. Charts on the financial sites are interactive and a speedy desktop will allow more students to conduct their research for their portfolios within the same timeframe. Students need enough time to interpret the data they view and be able to playback various formats to acquire the information. This desktop has that capability.

Do we have enough time to transact and look up the latest on the economy?

If we have a desktop that can download charts and important information with the speed needed the answer to the students can be a resounding yes. No longer will the children have to wait impatiently for results of a search and gone will be those error messages. Time is money, and in this case, financial literacy. We hope to have support for this project.
