Financial Literacy Night: Students and Families Preparing for the Future
My students need financial literacy books and board games for our Family Financial Literacy Night. These items will help my students and their families gain a better understanding of the value of financial literacy.
The students at my school are amazing! They are an energetic group of young people who attend a small, rural school in northeastern Wyoming. They are active in our classrooms, sports, and clubs. Recent economic woes have negatively affected their home lives and our school funding. Many of my students receive free and reduced lunch and many more fail to complete the paperwork. Despite this fact, they are dedicated to their work and dream of careers in a wide range of fields. My school's students are some of the most wonderfully imaginative, inquisitive and motivated learners I have encountered.
While I strongly believe in the quality of our school's curriculum, many of our students lack financial literacy which is critical for success in the real world.
In fact, a study from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) shows that one in five U.S. teenage students lack basic financial literacy skills.
My Project
The librarian and I are teaming up to offer a monthly Family Night at our rural high school. Each month has its own theme and accompanying activities. Students are very excited about these and our parent ran Booster Club recently agreed to provide snacks and drinks for the events.
We want to plan a Financial Literacy Night where parents and students can hear from a guest speaker, peruse materials from financial guru Dave Ramsey and play board games that simulate real-life financial situations and encourage financial literacy.
This event will give our students the opportunity to learn more about the financial responsibilities that they will encounter as they become adults. The books and board games can remain in the library after the event to be used by classes and individuals for years to come.
