Financial Literacy: Money Sense

Help me give my students hands on opportunities to explore financial literacy this school year.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. DeVuyst's classroom raised $311

My Students

Many of my students come from a wide variety of places to call America home. Most are English language learners from Bangladesh and Yemen. Most are also American Special Education students who are well below their level. All students have a drive to succeed and with the proper supports, will be able to do so in their core curriculum. These students are hard workers whose families lack the funds to provide our classroom with some of these essentials to allow for collaborative group learning.

As fourth grade students, it is important for my students to succeed in their state testing, preparing them for fifth grade and beyond.

My kiddos are so excited to learn new things embrace the many opportunities presented to them in the American education system.

My Project

This project will teach my students financial literacy. This gives them a hands-on opportunity. As newcomers to America, learning about the money system is an important part of their education and their well-being as American citizens. Money concepts support the fifth-grade curriculum as we study decimals. Students will learn the value of money using coins and bills. They will use self-checking pens to check their work as they answer questions about money. My students will demonstrate financial literacy as they engage in collaborative learning with their classmates using the Pay Day game.

Financial literacy needs to begin in school.

By middle school, students should be able to manage decisions around small amounts of money, understand percentages, and build understanding in budgets and savings.

Students in a mild to moderate special education class will be able to build financial literacy skills and use them in real-life situations. These lessons will be modified based on each individual’s skill set. Some students will work on the identification and counting of coins while other students will work on percentage discounts and taxes in sales, budgeting finances, and saving accounts.
