My students need money manipulatives, magnetic money, finance based board games, finance themed books, and pencils in order to promote financial literacy in second grade.
I teach a class of 28 amazing second graders. They are loving, intelligent, kind, and funny. They come to school wanting to learn and become better citizens.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and most come from families at lower income levels.
Many of my students come from challenging home environments and have limited resources at home. Many of them do not have basic supplies to help them succeed. The one thing they all have in common is that they are eager to learn.
My Project
I believe that education in financial literacy must begin early! My students are learning the basics of financial literacy. We are learning to count large numbers, add, subtract, and compare numbers. We are also learning the value of coins and adding money. All of these concepts are the foundation of financial literacy. The counters and magnetic coins will aid in their learning of counting in a fun way. I will be able to use the magnetic money, coins, and numbers to lead lessons on money and applying what we learn in our class store. The pencils and pencil sharpeners will be important for computation. My students will be able to write out math problems and also solve problems. They will be able to save their play money and budget for items they would like to purchase in the class store.
It is my personal goal to increase the financial literacy of my students in order to lay the foundation of making financially responsible decisions in their future.
They will be able to learn the foundation of financial literacy and build upon this knowledge. Students who have these skills will be able to make well thought out financial decisions in their future. Thank you for supporting my project!
