I teach financial literacy to wide range of students including students in a transitions class with mild to severe disabilities. I want to bring finance-emphasized, project-based learning to my students by having more hands on practice with the white boards solving problems.
My students are high school students in a small city school district.
Our school district is in the bottom 8% of spending per child in the state. More than 50% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches. Each day I teach over 100 students that have a wide range of needs. The majority of my students are taking personal finance and accounting classes to receive college credit, and students who have learning disabilities who take a transitions class where I teach financial literacy at multiple levels. I help my students by giving them the opportunity to participate in mock interviews, complete cover letters and resumes, attend job fair field trips, and job shadow. The majority of my students have no previous job experience. All of my students at every level will benefit from the real life experience of having unlimited practice and reinforcement of their success.
My Project
I am asking for four different kinds of reward stickers, three packs of colored pens, and a desk chair. The materials for this project will be used to set up the financial literacy tutoring station which will help all my students master the objectives of financial literacy. The chair will be used in the tutoring station to promote a positive environment for all students to grow and feel comfortable when seeking help. The reward stickers will give the students motivation on their assignments and also the classroom wall of fame to show how all the students are learning and achieving greatness. The pens will be used to help the students color code the different assignments and also allow for them to outline their notes in ways to help point out the major areas and the areas they need to work on.
This project will make a difference by offering my students the supplies they need to be successful in their study of financial literacy.
These resources can be used by multiple students for many years allowing them to reach the maximum number of students. The reward stickers are a simple yet effective motivator to help keep students involved and working hard toward their goal of mastering financial literacy, which only provides them with the needed skills to be successful in life.
