Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a teacher in a low-income, inner-city school region with a large, diverse population. Most of my students are first-generation Americans or immigrant children from a variety of South American countries. My students are faced with many challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Throughout the school year, it is our goal to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion of all! Our school is a Title I school, which means a school with large concentrations of low-income students. Some of the kiddos are special needs students, are ESL students and/or have other types of special needs. Regardless of their challenges though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed. In spite of their personal experiences, most of my students are very active, enthusiastic learners who possess a thirst for knowledge.

Teaching financial literacy to my 5th graders is essential for building money management skills and there are various engaging resources, apps (Savings Spree: This engaging app teaches kids about earning, spending, and saving money through fun games, Mazoola, and Bankaroo among others) and lesson plans available to facilitate this learning.

My students would greatly benefit from having access to an iPad for our financial literacy unit of study. The requested iPad and case will allow them to engage in a multitude of activities and using some of the aforementioned apps that are designed to understand money, budgeting, saving and spending, apply basic mathematics skills in finance, and make appropriate financial decisions given many scenarios

The ipad will be shared in small groups, where everyone will have the opportunity to work on projects and make financial literacy presentations fostering teamwork and discussion as they explore financial concepts together. This ensures all students have equal access to technology and the chance to develop 21st century skills.
