My Students

My school is a majority-minority school with a high population of African American and LatinX students. We are in an urban public school in North Carolina. The focus of the school is Career and Technical Education (CTE). This means students have additional choices on courses that focus on manufacturing, public safety, foods, and nursing.

In my class, students regularly enjoy learning opportunities that are hands-on, minds-on, and relevant to the real-world..

The labs and activity incorporate real-world scenarios. This approach helps them to understand situations they may have encountered in the world. Also, we focus on issues that connect our classroom to global and cultural issues. This includes, but not limited to, social justice issues in mining to the global water crisis. Learning has meaning to them.

My Project

As a high school science teacher, my job is not only to teach the students science content but to teach them life skills as well. My students are at the stage where they are getting jobs, earning their own money, considering colleges, and overall preparing to be good independent citizens in this global world.

The funding for this project will be used to teach high school students financial literacy and occupational skills in a concrete way.

Students will earn their "wages" (play money) by completing academic tasks, demonstrating good citizenship in the school, etc. Students will be "paid" every two weeks. After they pay their "expenses", they can purchase items from the store, save their money, or both. Money saved will earn interest. In addition, students earning their internship hours will be in charge of running the store.
