Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My New York City English Language Learning students are nearly 500 years behind today's business world! The pencil was invented in 1564. We NEED your support to escape the binds of 16th century technology and move past pencils and paper, and onto more sustainable, appealing methods of learning.

We go to school literally MINUTES FROM WALL STREET!

It stands to reason that Math students should necessarily have consistent access to the wealth of economic and financial statistics that abound, minutes from our school! We attend an urban middle school full of dedicated, but economically disadvantaged students. Though we study the quantitative effects and social justice issues surrounding historical economic conditions, we need a direct connection to the world around us in order to make more informed and aware academic decisions. I plan on hosting financial literacy investigations with groups of students to coach them towards understanding indispensable elements of everyday life. Financial Literacy is essential for flourishing in today's world, especially for students that actually live in poverty. This project can and will sincerely change the course of my students' lives, through developing awareness of the concepts of credit, investment, debt, and entrepreneurship.

My Project

With new computers, my students will visualize the relevant math behind bigger financial literacy concepts along with monitoring stock, index, and bond prices using GoogleFinance. Efficient computers will provide my students with continuous access to relevant quantitative data in the form of economic indicators, and will allow us to use online tools to explore changes in relevant metrics over time! I plan on establishing working definitions for assets, inventory, profit, and loss by introducing the classic 'Lemonade Stand' online game with students, keeping track of standings in notebooks. We will use GoogleSheets to explore how monitoring personal finances is essential for household stability. Contemporary students need to feel a powerful connection to concepts of Number Sense, Operations, and a meaningful exploration of Statistics. What better way to do so than with current technology, in a form that will ensure a passion for financial literacy in the rest of my students' lives?

As a teacher with a background in Finance and Economics, I envision facilitating a full Financial Literacy curriculum that uses Statistics in a meaningful manner to develop stronger Number Sense among struggling students.

This project will help my students engage in profound studies of relevant economic structures. Students will use technology to display data that will support their financial literacy as well as develop their innovative and entrepreneurial minds, but ONLY WITH YOUR HELP!
