Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is filled with students who love to learn. Some have limited vocabulary and benefit from visual prompts. They are very active and need individualized attention to meet their needs.

They are kinesthetic learners who benefit from hands-on activities and love to create.

My students lack organizational skills and require a lot of help and prompting. My students are students with emotional and behavior disorders, and/or learning disabilities. The general education environment proves too demanding for my students.

I am lucky to have a small class. But, that comes with the challenges of them being in different grades, fourth through eighth grades, and on different levels of learning. With the small class, I am able to learn their strengths and weaknesses, help prepare them for independence, and help them return to the general education classroom. We are located in a rural area in the northern panhandle of West Virginia. Most children come from a low socioeconomic background.

My Project

I have seen success when students are given hands on materials to learn about financial literacy. I will use the materials in math class to help my students learn how to budget money, make plans for paychecks, how to save, and how to deal with surprises. Students will be able to see what bills are required each month. They will also learn about needs versus wants and how to make the tough decisions adults deal with each month.

This project is taking a lesson I have done in the past and is making it more hands on for increased success.

We will have the calendars in the pocket chart. Behind each number will be an index card. On the index cards, there will be bills for the month written under certain dates. There will also be paydays, surprise bills, and surprise money earned. Students will keep track of their money in the checkbook ledgers. They will learn how to write checks, how to fill out deposit slips, how to keep track of debits from their debit cards, and how to budget and plan.

My students need to learn the value of a dollar and understand that money is not readily available. When they have their personal items, they do not take care of them as if they have to pay for their replacements. The response is always "I will just get another one". This project will hopefully help them understand that there are bills that need paid and that they should take care of their items.
