What are you? A learner? A mathematician? A scientist? A reader? An artist? A teacher? A writer? Students are all of these things and more.
Fifth graders are awesome.
They are so excited to participate in school when hands-on approaches and technology are involved. They are smart and creative. They are excited to publish all types of stories and create all types of art. They are excited to learn math skills, science, social studies, spelling, grammar, reading, vocabulary, and physical skills. Fifth graders are the perfect age to foster a love of learning so that their love of learning may continue throughout their lives.
My Project
I know that my fifth graders are smart and creative, but I worry about their financial literacy. I want to help them learn, now, what being 'money smart' is. I want them to learn about money, jobs, savings, taxes, spending, and wants vs. needs. Students will learn how to balance a checkbook, figure out how much something costs when you buy it on time, how money grows when you save it, and what kind of career they want.
We will use the books, Chromebooks, and iPad keyboards (with iPads we already have) to research these topics online and to keep track of a personal financial plan. We need these tools to access information and tools available on the Internet, including websites with activities that will strengthen our financial literacy. Websites that we will use include: practicalmoneyskills.com, themint.org, moneyasyougrow.org, and moneyasyoulearn.org. The magnetic money will be used to visually show how interest makes money grow and how interest on purchases increases the cost.
Financial literacy is a critical need for students.
So many people are in debt and in financial crisis. I want my students to make some financial decisions now that may help them in the future. I want them to understand the benefits of getting a good job, saving for a rainy day, staying out of debt, and making money work for them, not cause them problems. Thank you for considering helping us reach our goals.
