Financial Literacy Comes Alive In The Classroom

My Students

Teaching students about money management is often missing in today's classrooms. I believe that students who learn to manage their money early will become adults who are better equipped to manage the challenges of life.

I want to help my students learn money management skills so that they can become financially literate adults.

My district works very hard to enhance student learning, but does not always have the funds for needed classroom supplies. Over half of the students in my district receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students come from hard-working homes where the parents do not have money left over to purchase books or supplies.

My Project

I teach ELA to a group of eager sixth graders. Many stay after school for enrichment activities. I also teach a small group of students in a class called RTI. I would like to provide financial literacy activities for my students. The students who stay after school and who are in my RTI are eager to improve their skills and are looking for engaging activities. I would like to add another chromebook to our classroom so that students can use the website Banzai.

Banzai is an engaging financial literacy website designed for middle schoolers.

Students learn how to prioritize spending decisions through real-life scenarios and choose-your-own adventure stories. Through the 32 modules offered, sudents manage rent, gas, groceries, taxes, car payments, and life’s emergencies.

My students love to use Banzai but we do not have enough computers to go around so that all students can have a turn on this financial literacy site. By providing another chromebook to my students, I am providing a chance for one more student to use this educational website.

Teaching children about money has a great impact on their future. Learning about money managemet may help them avoid personal debt and improve their chances of achieving financial security in the future. With the use of technology learning about money mangement can be fun!
