Our Title I school has around 900 students who come from diverse backgrounds. A large portion of my school's population comes from poverty-stricken homes. They are kids with hopes and dreams of making their lives better and bettering the future of their families.I work with a group of energetic first grade students in a low income school. All of the students participate in our free meal program at school. Many of my students are second language learners. They are always so excited and eager to learn as they come to school every day.
My students are full of wonder, imagination, and best of all, they love to explore new things.
My students need some resources to encourage them to practice positive behaviors and learning financial literacy at the same time.
My Project
My students need to learn and understand the meaning of money and its values. It is important to build that understanding since young. I would like to use the classroom economy system to help and promote positive behaviors and build Financial Literacy Skills at the same time through our classroom store.
Students are given some paper play money when modeling our expectations, as well as going above and beyond being helpful and kind.
Every two weeks, students save their money and take a trip to our classroom store to spend their savings and get the item we have requested like the squishy balls, bumpy rings, etc. Items are priced between $1 to $10 and we will discuss ways to save money to buy something that cost more.
Through your support, I will be able to create this classroom economy system which will help provide incentives for my students to practice the expected appropriate behaviors, as well as continue our discussion around financial responsibility with earning, saving, and spending. My students will have the opportunity to plan how to spend their hard earned money in our classroom store in a fun way.
