My Students
My students come from low economic backgrounds where their neighborhood is surrounded by negativity, crime, and violence. Somehow my students manage to come to school every day despite their current urban surroundings.
My school is a safe haven for all the children in the community where they can come and feel safe and know that each person in the building loves each of them whole-heartedly.
The majority of my students are more than two grade levels behind and need additional material in order to build them up to their rightful grade level. We currently have about 50% of our students who reside in homeless shelters nearby. Based on the current data, students require additional phonics practice to build them up to their current grade level.
My Project
Help give student money manipulatives and money concept board games so that they are able to understand financial literacy. By providing my students with these supplies students will be able to make real life connections as it pertains to saving and utilization of money. Students will also learn the difference between needs, wants, goods and services. By using math to connect to finance when it come to money usage this will help increase financial literacy within the community. This will raise awareness within the minority population located in the urban core of Miami where my students live and will also motivate students to make better life decisions and prepare them for real world experiences in the near future.
