I am the first grade teacher to 19 students in a small, rural, east Texas town.
A majority of my students come from economically challenged homes.
Some of my students are English Language Learners. Our school is mainstream, where students with special needs are in regular classrooms with the other students.
My students are eager to learn, but many of my students come to school hungry and in need of basic supplies to meet their needs. This makes it hard for them to learn.
My Project
My students are learning about financial literacy. They are learning how to count coins, earn coins for hard work and good behavior, saving, and spending.
Everyday students earn coins for good behavior, hard work during stations, and doing their homework.
Then on Fridays our class store is open for shopping. Students must decide what items they want to save their money for. They get to shop and spend their money. They are learning the value of hard work, good choices, and saving for want you want to purchase. The items in this project will be used for our class store. These are fun high interest toys that students will want to earn and save for! There is also a coin puzzle to help them practice counting money.
