My Students

Show me the money!!!! I believe it is important for children to begin understanding economics at an early age. Even first graders can begin to understand wants vs. need, the value of money, and the distinctions between saving and spending.

I teach in a large, urban, public school district.

Our school has the most diverse population of all elementary schools in the district. Classrooms are inclusive with English Language Learners and Special Education students. My first graders crave new knowledge. They have special interest in real-life, obviously relevant topics, such as money.

My Project

Although the daily life of a student today usually involves some association with money (shopping with a parent, saving birthday money, finding a coin on the playground, etc.) first graders need to be taught about the value of money. First graders are learning to name coins, coin values, how to make change, the difference between saving and spending, and decision-making in regards to money. I feel it is important to teach financial literacy at a young age. I am requesting books related to money for read alouds and discussions. I am requesting play money and a cash register to allow students hands on experience learning coin values, buying/selling and giving change.

With books, activities and games that help students better understand finances, and continued education, students will be better prepared to be productive, successful citizens in the future.
