Finance Fun For Fourth & Fifth

My students need materials to help them learn how to use money in real life situations. By having access to financial literacy games, educational resources, and money center activities, they will have more exposure to finances.

My Students

The students I service in our center based program for children with autism in 4th-5th grades come from different areas of the county. Each child is unique in their abilities and require more support than neuro-typical peers.It is the job of both myself and my staff to meet each of our special learners where they are and aid in unlocking their potential. My goal is for them to grow as learners as well as individuals, so that they may be as independent as possible when they leave the educational system.

Temple Grandin put it best when she said "There needs to be a lot more emphasis on what a child can do, instead of what he cannot do."

My Project

Our class focuses on using money throughout the school year so that they may become more financially literate. Our class takes multiple field trips, so that they may receive community based instruction in the area of money.

These items would greatly benefit our program by not only expanding my teaching resources, but to make finances fun and engaging for my group of special learners.

Educational games such as pay Day and Allowance, would help my students not only learn about money, but also social skills in the area of turn taking and good sportsmanship. Math center activities such as Hot Dots would allow them to work independently and gain confidence in themselves.

Literature for our class library with its basis in money would expose students to finance during independent reading time. Having a cash register to access would help them practice practical ways to use money while preparing them for both real world situations as well as community based instruction trips.
