My Students

As a Title I school, my students come from a wide variety of underprivileged backgrounds, and a multitude of family and home situations. In general, my students are hard-working, hands-on learners who often struggle with language; my students appreciate the visual and tactile experiences of science, and I love exposing them to tangible, visual, and experimental nature of science content.

My students are generally mature enough to appreciate the depth and application of science content, but young enough to still get wide-eyed at the magic behind scientific explanations of the world around them.

My Project

My students have been through so much. About half of them haven’t been at school in person since the first part of 6th grade! They feel so behind, and they feel cheated out of so many awesome lab experiences. And, we know that students learn and enjoy Science so much more when they get to perform hands-on experiments!

Using these resources, we will explore comparative anatomy and how different body structures in various organisms provide lines of evidence for evolution.

SCI.MS.LS4 or per NGSS code, MS.LS.4-2.

It is a very rare experience in 8th grade that students are exposed to such a wealth of life science specimens and different types of organisms for dissections and comparison. This unit gives my students a leg up to prepare for high school, gets them excited again for Science, and helps them feel like they are making up for so many lost lab experiences.

Students at this level are generally mature enough to perform dissections and benefit from the experience of using the tools and learning procedures before they enter high school. I've had students become so fascinated by dissections that they recognize that they want to enter the medical field due to their interest in anatomy and actual specimens. The materials here also provide sustainable, reusable, and other options for students who don’t want to work with the actual dissection specimens, providing a rich and accessible experience for all students, even if they happen to currently be excluded, via the paper model dissections.
