The students are from a low socio-economic background that have access to Advanced Placement as well as International Baccalaureate courses as part of the school's International Baccalaureate Magnet Program. The 150 students are in the largest high school in the district, with 2000 students sharing about 90 available computers. The students are limited in their much-needed supplies due to sharing budget money with other high schools. The students are required to use technology daily and it is not always accessible.
The plan is to have at least one Chromebook for each of the cooperative teams (6 groups of 5 students). While in the midst of a lesson, the students will be able to access necessary research information as they prepare to produce written assignments that are submitted to turnitin.com to determine writing authenticity.
In Their Own Words
This will save so much time in getting projects done on the spot. We won’t have to wait for free periods or when we get home. No more wasted time. My teacher tries his hardest to book the computer lab, but we always get bumped for standardized testing. It’s so annoying.
The more access we have to information through technology in the classroom, the more informed we will be and make better academic decisions. We are training to be global leaders in the IB program so access to world information would benefit each one of us each and every day of the week
There are not enough computers in the building. We are always waiting or begging teachers to use theirs. This would make the school day so much easier and less hectic. When 1800+ students try to get to about 90+ computers, it’s not a good situation. We go to class asking for more time to get even the simple things done.
