Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My theatre students are piloting a film course for this year. They are doing this because even in global pandemics, students will learn. Teachers teach. Coaches coach. Contests will be won and lost. Instruction will change – as will the venue, the playing field, and the stage. This year, competitions and contests, performances, and presentations continue, some live and in person, but the majority will be virtual.

Monologues, UIL Prose and Poetry, duet acting scenes, musical numbers for Texas Thespians, and UIL Theatrical Design will all be virtual.

Tournaments will be online. Auditions will be recorded,

artwork photographed and portfolios digital.

My students are fearless and always ready for a challenge. Many of them use the arts as a way to make sense of the world around them. In piloting this course they not only will be helping themselves but helping the countless number of students who will be auditioning for colleges across the country.

My Project

What happens when the world is driven inside? For artists, the very thing that was their livelihood was taken away. For students as they saw theatres across the country shut down many worried that their future goals would now be unattainable. But, artists have the tenacity to continue and chose to go digital!

As Covid-19 raged across our country and drove everyone to their digital communities the arts had to adapt and change while trying to bridge the gap of equity.

Midland ISD has been working to fill the gaps for students without internet resources and without viable access. MISD has provided laptops, hotspots, internet connections, and continues to purchase even more.

We need to provide the most competitive edge to our participating students and directors with the purchase of film equipment, cameras, microphones, speakers, and computer software. Submissions statewide will undoubtedly be judged by the talent of the student and the production values of their video.

One objective for this project is to provide the equipment and training to teachers and students helping them create digital products to submit for auditions, contests, and competitions that pivoted to a digital platform for the 2020-2021 school year. A second objective is to provide the supplies, equipment and training to pilot a film course at both MISD high schools to compete in the UIL Film event.

As the world changes it is our duty to keep the arts alive. In those early days of the pandemic, we turned to TV, film, and the arts to keep us company. We turned to the arts to give us a smile in an otherwise bleak world; by helping fund this project you are helping the students of MISD keep their dreams and art alive as we move to digital platforms.
