My students are a diverse, eager to learn group from an urban, low-income population in downtown Indianapolis. They are in your face independent with hopes and dreams as unique as they are themselves! 75% of my students receive free or reduced lunches and 50% of my students receive SPED services or ESL services.
My students are our collective future.
They are changing physically and emotionally during these pre-teen years and I strive to provide a safe and comfortable space for them to grow and learn. In our social studies classroom we explore the world while learning about ourselves and how to become engaged and informed lifelong learners! My students can recognize that hard work is its own reward and with a positive attitude and a little grit, you can do anything!
My Project
At our school, we have one iPad cart that consists of 20 iPads to share between 9 classrooms and 127 students. We are in desperate need of technology in our building. For students with disabilities and for those without, technology can be the bridge between being able to access the curriculum and falling behind.
I co-teach with the special education teacher and our goal is to have a class set of Chromebooks for our students to use on a daily basis.
With these Chromebooks we plan on making our classroom a 1:1 technology model. This would mean that each student would have their own Chromebook to use during the block period (90 minutes) that they are in our class. All of our content would be provided to them electronically. This would dramatically cut down on the amount of paper we use, help our middle schoolers stay organized, and prepare them for high school and college.
Most high schools have moved towards a 1:1 technology model and our students are not prepared. They have no access to technology now, so they have limited professional technical skills. They have difficulty typing, using word documents, emailing and navigating the internet; all very important skills required for them to be successful in the upper grades and in life outside of the classroom setting.
Right now we do not have curriculum or textbooks for my students and I prepare the materials and find or create content to meet our state standards myself. Having technology in the classroom would expand my students learning and allow for natural differentiation of content and materials.
It is critical the students I teach have the same opportunities and are prepared for the competitive technological society that awaits them. Please help me fund this project!
