Filling Pandemic Gaps

Help me give my students the practice they need to be secure in math and to learn how to be clear, concise writers!

My Students

My students live in a Utah town in a low-income neighborhood. Hardworking parents often don't have time or don't know how to fully support learning at home. Frequently, the effects of poverty manifest in a child's inability to focus and tune out distractions which are skills needed for learning.

My students love learning and are committed to building a better future through hard work and practice!

Title I schools face the challenges of poverty that other schools do not. Research is documenting the impact that poverty has on education. Nearly 60% of students in our school receive free or reduced-price meals. A third are native Spanish speakers. My students need a school that understands their special challenges and intervenes to help.

We are preparing today's students for the jobs of tomorrow. Essentially, we are teaching students the ways to think critically and not just training them on vocational skills. I do not even know what jobs we will need in thirty years, but I do know that they need to read, do the math, think analytically, and problem solve.

My Project

My current fifth graders were third graders when pandemic school closure took affect. Despite constant effort as teacher we are facing gaps that are usually resolved before 5th grade.

Teaching off-level math and writing standards becomes easier when we have access to shared lessons from teachers.

In addition to math, polishing writing skills is a big 5th grade objective. Adjectives, adverbs, similes, metaphors, and idioms are all exciting figurative language that we learn in the 5th grade. Writing instruction on vibrant language, concise sentence structure, and organization skills leads to great growth in writing scores. Understanding the differences between a complex sentence and a simple sentence empowers students to be bolder with their sentence structures as writers. With limited time in classroom instruction, the need for finding ways to teach these skills, that not only pull students in, but engage them, is difficult at best. Teachers Pay Teachers is a great resource to find lessons that have everything to not only teach, but engage students in their writing.
